Celebrating the 80th Anniversary of the International Monetary Fund - A Visual Tour of the IMF's History
This is a website celebrating the 80th anniversary of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Here we present the history of IMF lending and its impact over the past 80 years through a series of unique data visualizations. This visual tour not only gives you a comprehensive understanding of the IMF's history and contributions, but also allows you to get a sense of its important role in the global economy.
ConceptThe goal of this project was to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the IMF. We needed to create a website as well as an installation. First we set the tone for this project - shared prosperity, working together.
So we expanded on the International Monetary Fund (IMF) logo, with olive branches extending into flowers to represent member countries, and incorporated the national flower used by each member country into the design. The raindrops moisturize the flowers, symbolizing the IMF's assistance to the economic growth of its member countries.
Curating DataTo present this theme, we processed the data. First, because of time limitations, we could not present all countries. So we divided the 80 years in decades. The five countries with the highest amounts of loans borrowed in each decade were chosen to represent the countries to be highlighted.

Design ProcessOur aim is to show 80 years of IMF history, so I visualize the basic form as a timeline.
At the same time, in order to correspond to the theme of “shared prosperity, working together”, we chose to use “garden” as the design language, with the national flower of each country as its representative.
And in order to emphasize the officiality, we mapped the historical events in the IMF's official history chronology with the historical events of each country, so as to show the IMF's in-depth study of history.
Moodboard
Design SketchWe will use an interactive webpage with rainning backgroud music representing the IMF and different flowers representing member countries. The changing heights of the flowers will visualise the scale of IMF support , with higher heights reflecting larger amounts of support. The roots of the flowers will show key historical events, deepening the understanding of the economic progress of the member countries. The design is designed to enhance the user experience and simplify the understanding of complex information through interactive and visual effects.
